Crafting a Handmade Instrument...
Crafting handmade instruments is a meticulous and artistic process that involves several steps. It begins with selecting high-quality wood, Cedar or Palo Escrito, known for their resonance and durability. The chosen wood is then carefully cut into the body, neck, and headstock components.
The body is shaped in various steps. First the back and then the sides are shaped applying heat and steam and bending the wood very slowly so it won’t break. When the sides are shaped, they are then clipped around and left to mold for a couple of days, while the neck is carved and fitted with a fingerboard, made from a stronger wood; ebony or granadillo. Precise fret placement is crucial for accurate intonation. The headstock is crafted to accommodate tuning pegs.
After assembling the main components, the instruments are meticulously sanded to achieve a smooth finish. The next step involves applying a finish, which can be a traditional varnish or lacquer. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also protects the wood.
